hey everyone it’s Ben from solar reviews today we’re going to talk about something exciting the Tesla solar roof if you’ve been interested in solar for a while you’ve definitely seen the Tesla roof it’s a Sleek Modern Roofing system with solar cells embedded between tempered glass and steel in tiles that can cover any roof in a spectacularly stealthy solar system it’s got a class 4 hail rating and a Class A fire rating which your insurance company will love but it also adds a ton to the replacement value of your house so get ready for premiums to go up it’s available now across the country either directly from Tesla or from one of its partner Roofing installers now back in 2022 the very popular YouTuber Marquez brownley got a Tesla solar roof installed back then he paid $120,000 for the roof on his very nice New Jersey home at the time he estimated he would see a 10-year payback on that investment more recently prices for the solar roof have gone up way up if you’d like to find out how much marquez’s system would cost today stick around to the end of the video but for now we can provide some pricing numbers for more modest homes the solar reviews team has evaluated dozens of solar roof purchase agreements over the past several years and we’ve got some good solid info about what to expect if you choose to purchase a Tesla solar roof for your home in 2024 replacing an existing roof on a typical home with a Tesla solar roof and a power wall battery in 2024 costs around $120,000 before incentives if you get an installed by Tesla directly but let’s be serious not everyone has a typical home meaning there will be a wide variation of prices based on house size additionally Tesla doesn’t do direct solar roof installations in most places and prices from Tesla’s solar partner installers very widely we’ve seen quotes anywhere from $120,000 for a 1,700 ft system up to $400,000 for a 5,600 ft roof those are some big numbers but for your money you get a superior product now let’s compare those Tesla roof prices to some other options according to our friends at fixer.com the average premium slate tile roof costs around $16 per square foot and rooftop solar panels coming at around $3 per watt so instead of paying $20 to $400,000 for the Tesla roof you could choose the Slate tiles and solar for between 60 and 160,000 if you’re more budget-minded you might choose an asphalt jingle roof again we go to our friends at fixer.com who say that the average cost is around $9 per square foot for asphalt shingles the price for our range of roof sizes plus solar panels would be50 to $120,000 and you could even save 10 grand or so by skipping the battery all that said if you have the cash and don’t like the look of traditional solar panels the Tesla roof is probably the nicest looking option on the market so it’s helpful to have this range of pricing information but there is also a lot of nuance when it comes to the cost of a solar roof for a specific home that has to to do with a few factors like number one whether you get the installation from Tesla directly or one of its Partners number two how complicated your roof is and whether it’s a re-roof or a newly built home number three the proportion of solar to non-solar tiles on the roof number four the amount of battery storage you need along with the solar and number five the incentives available in your area is your roof one or two stories off the ground or more are there lots of Peaks and valleys that will increase the cost of materials and Engineering to get everything to fit on the flip side a pretty straightforward gable roof with mostly rectangular faces on a single story home will keep costs down similarly tearing off an old roof and replacing it with Tesla tiles adds about $2.50 per square foot to the cost so installing the solar tiles on a new roof is a little cheaper and how much solar power do you need the amount of solar you need is determined by the total amount of energy your home needs over the year and limited by the available space on the roof for solar tiles every watt of solar tiles adds $11.80 to the total cost of the Tesla roof changing the total cost of the system remember those prices from before the $120,000 system had 6.5 Kow of solar tiles on a 1700 ft roof with one power wall battery the $400,000 system had 13 Kow of solar tiles on a 5,500 ft roof with two power walls the power walls cost about $15,000 each including installation which isn’t cheap you could get away without one and replace it with a Tesla inverter which would probably save you about $10,000 the power wall 3 comes with its own integrated solar inverter and each one can handle up to 10 Kow of solar input you can add as many as you like which increases both battery capacity and the amount of solar tiles you can have on the roof finally incentives this is a tough topic because they vary so widely from state to state but the one almost everyone can qualify for is the federal solar tax credit by the way we have a video about that that we will link to right there the current tax credit can earn you back 30% of the costs you pay to install solar and batteries on a home in the USA but not all Tesla solar roof costs qualify that’s because of the differences between those solar and non-solar tiles let me see if I can get this quote from the IRS right in the tax credit instructions they say some solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles serve the function of both traditional Roofing and solar electric collectors and thus serve functions of both solar electric generation and structural support these solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles can qualify for the credit this is in contrast to structural components such as a roof’s decking or Rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function and thus do not qualify for the credit so there you have it in black and white something that serves only a roofing or structural function does not qualify for Tesla’s part they say your solar roof purchase agreement provides an estimated allocation of components that may be eligible for a tax credit this estimated allocation is not intended as tax advice you should discuss this allocation with a tax professional from what we’ve seen by looking at all those Tesla purchase agreements the proportion of the total solar roof costs that’s eligible for the tax credit averages around 70% so on a $120,000 solar roof about $84,000 of that will be eligible for the credit and 30% of that is $25,200 that brings the net cost for that typical Tesla solar roof down to $94,800 after the tax credit if that is you can claim the full value of the credit in one year definitely talk with those tax professionals before making any decisions again all these numbers are based on our evaluation of actual test the roof estimates but every home is unique and this is a premium product that requires a lot of work to get right when you agree to buy a Tesla solar roof from an installation partner there will be a whole team of people dedicated to your project from engineers and system designers at Tesla to the team working with your general contractor all the way down to the roofing workers who will do the actual installation from what we’ve heard from Tesla customers the process can take between five and eight months to go from quote to final inspections and permission to turn the system on so what you’re really signing up for here is a long journey toward having the coolest roof in town at a cost that would make just about anybody blush oh and speaking of cost let’s get back to Marquez browny’s roof he told us a bit about his system in the video including the facts that he had 29.3 Kow of solar tiles and three power wall batteries we did some math based on those numbers using the average mix of solar and non-solar tiles to determine his roof is probably about 6,600 ft at today’s prices from Tesla’s installation Partners we estimate the cost of mkbhd’s solar roof project would be $416,000 before incentives that definitely throws the 10-year payback estimate out the window if you’ve gotten a quote for the Tesla solar roof feel free to share it with us in the comments below we are always looking for more data to add to our analyses and you’ll be helping make the next great video from our Channel that’s
