hello everybody and welcome back to the coolest dog training channel right here on YouTube I’m Tom Davis America’s canine educator if you’re new here welcome thank you so much for checking me out if you’ve been here I appreciate your loyalty just doing a video on how to become a professional dog trainer and all this stuff that goes through it today I’m back in my van studios you can see and I am going to give you the inspiring dog trainer the person who wants to start dog training career first he wants to get into working with dogs professionally this video is for you I’m gonna give you three important tips on how to boost and start your dog training career the first thing I want to talk about is the reality of the dog training community and the reality of the dog training career as you may know if you’ve listened to any my podcast or listened to anything that I’ve done that’s why I make the vlog as well every now and then to just show you a little bit of what it’s like on a daily routine and I think it’s important for you to understand that being a professional dog trainer 100% does not mean that you’re gonna play and work with dogs all day a lot of it has to do with business a lot of it has to do with dealing with people and dealing with clients a very small portion of your career is actually going to be working with dogs unless you work for somebody else which I’m going to talk about here in a little bit but there is a significant difference between owning your own dog training company and being a dog trainer which is very important I suggest if you want to train dogs and want to work with dogs every day and I’ll have the headache of running your own company and running your own business go work for somebody else and so this goes for business in general just because you start a company or a business doesn’t mean you’re successful and it doesn’t mean that you’re gonna always do that I would say the mystically the majority of small businesses fail within their first two years or like 90% or something like that it’s crazy those are the type of things of the reality of owning a dog training camp and owning a dog training business that you have to deal with on a daily basis that a lot of people don’t get to see so again there’s a significant difference between being successful and opening up a business any person on the planet any single person on the planet can start a dog training business any single person it doesn’t matter if you work with dogs it doesn’t matter if you like dogs or you don’t you can start your own dog training business but there is a significant difference between slap and a logo on a card and on a hoodie and having a Wix website and saying Here I am I’m a dog training business and actually being successful and success in measurement and business sense I would say is making money making revenue not just paying the bills not just getting by because you can only do that for so long I did that for a very very long time but I put myself in a situation where I committed to the committed to the dream and committed to myself that I wasn’t gonna do anything else this is exactly what I was gonna do and nothing would stop me and I was reluctant I continue to be relentless I cannot work hard enough I don’t like going out and doing all these other things actually I do but the problem is is I don’t find that productive I don’t find that progressional and every single day I have to do something progressional I have to do something to better me and what I want to do but that’s my personality that’s just the type of human I developed into I think what I’m trying to say is there’s a lot of younger dog trainers going to school or aspiring dog trainers and I get them all all year long I get students all the time from different colleges come in shadow and enjoy our intern program from all different walks of life and all different ages and I think they just see like dog trainer dog trainer dog training dog trainer dog trainer but you have to look a little bit further than that look a bit look a bit further of like are they are they really successful and I don’t mean successful as how good they are on social media or how many followers they have that that doesn’t accumulate success success means at the end of the day are you actually making money so you can support yourself and support your family and pay your bills etc so just know that there’s a significant difference between the two and many many people that I know that I’ve watched start a business aren’t successful and that doesn’t mean that they don’t love what they do and that certainly doesn’t mean that they’re not enjoying what they do it just means at the end of the day they’re not making any money and so that’s just a little information going forward that it’s definitely very very very very very hard to survive in this industry and make actual profit and I’m not saying about like how much is in your bank account none I’m just saying in a business sense you got to think at the end of the day if it costs you $100 to go around to people’s houses and you made 90 off the training you’re not successful you’re not making money you’re not you’re not gonna be able to get by because now you don’t have any profits and so that’s very generalized I could talk about that a bit longer maybe I’ll do that in the podcast but I just wanted to throw that out there really quickly is sometimes people see all these dog training camps open up and all these in-home dog trainers open up which is wonderful which is fantastic however realistically I don’t want you to just think because they opened up a business that they’re making money or they’re successful or they’re paying their taxes or they’re paying themselves it just means that they they wanted to have their own brands so bad that they opened up a business and a lot of times those people actually have full-time jobs on the side which there’s nothing wrong with that at all that’s actually a safe bet that I would encourage most people to do especially starting off but I wanted to just talk to the younger dog trainers or even just the people who are 70 years old 6 years old 50 euros that just want to get into dog training just because you see all these dog training companies and the stickers on the car and things like that does not mean that they’re doing well moving forward I hope that that wasn’t negative or painted the picture of this video being negative I just wanted to be real with you guys I wanted to show you and tell you and talk about there’s more struggle than anything but if you believe deep down inside it’s something that you should be doing and it’s something that your whole life purpose is meant for keep at it my friend but moving forward I’m gonna get into step one I would encourage people to start looking at what they’re good at dog training again on the outside perspective or somebody who goes I want to be a dog trainer example I don’t do a lot of obedience training it’s not my specialty well people come to me for information on how to build a better relationship with their dog how to fix these behavioral issues that a lot of other people can’t are especially the dog owners cannot and so I’m a specialist in what I want to do and what I’m good at I don’t try to do anything else that I that I’m not that great at can I do obedience and competitive and compete sure but I don’t spend the majority of my time doing these things what I do is I specifically do the things that I’m good at that makes me the happiest which is behavior modification so I would really audit who you are what drives you what makes you want to work with dogs do you want to work with service dogs is that fulfill your needs do you want to work with therapy dogs do you want to work with obedience training to help people with competitive stuff do you want to work with pet owners just doing basics and little behavioral stuff what do you want to do so I would be focusing on exactly what you want to do do you want to deal with behavior modification cases the dogs that are killing other dogs trying to kill other dogs trying to bite people trying to go after people fearful stuff that’s the stuff that literally gives me goosebumps when a dog walks in that uncontrolled I can’t wait to work I can’t wait to start that’s the stuff I focus on I don’t try to do all this other stuff I have other trainers I have full staff of trainers that a lot of people don’t even see we have ten other people in our business that do all the other all the other stuff that I’m not the best at or I’m not comfortable of doing or it just doesn’t drive me and so when you’re thinking about getting into the dog training world be open to everything but when you start getting serious about what you want to focus on dial it in to say I want to specifically do this because I find in life in general if you focus on one thing and you devote your time to that one thing because it makes you the happiest you’re gonna be the best at it in your game second tip would be watch as much content as you can read as many books as you can I unfortunately like I’m not a big reader I just am NOT might I like the idea of reading I’m just being real with you guys is my my brain like I’m so all over the place that I can’t down and read something and benefit from it my brain does not cognitively register that stuff and stick I have to do something I’m a practitioner I have to do something in order for me to learn how to do it so because there’s a lot of people who will learn the opposite is like they have to read literature in order to put that into their bank so if anybody out there has good books for starting doctrine and leave them in the comments below so other people can can go to that that’s why we’re the coolest dog training channels kids we’re working together as a community and we want to grow and we’re positive and we’re helping each other out so leave some comments below of like some good books but it’s one of the other things I want to talk about in tip 2 would be finding a school that fits you best so there’s many different schools out there but again it’s it’s about how you want to train what you want to train there’s schools for obedience their schools for service dogs therapy dogs protection dogs police dogs so many different variables one school that I just know of that a couple of my friends teach at would be the Michael Ellis School in Santa Rosa California I’ve sent some of my students there and I’ve been there and it’s a great school it’s a great environment for people to learn Michael’s her account that what he does but he’s got a bunch of different classes so you can look it up I think Michael Ellis school for dog trainers just google it the other one that’s good that I’ve heard of his Tom Rose school I’ve never met him I’ve never been to a school but I’ve heard that that’s a good school and then just you know the ABC school the animal behavioral College it’s better than nothing if you want some literature they put you through that it’s really nice tip number three would be go work for somebody before you open up your own business I can tell you from experience that like I used to run a daycare and boarding facility and training center and I saw I knew how to do the operational stuff I knew how to do like what software to use what cleaning products to use all that stuff if you go do hands-on stuff with somebody and you’re in the trenches I would suggest at least six months a year would be better to really just figure out how you’re doing this thing I would also highly suggest when you do these things mention to the owner or mention to the person that you charge like hey like at some point I might my goal is to open up my own place because that matters because I I can’t tell you how many people have come and shadowed me and I’ve poured my my entire guts to about everything which I don’t mind doing and then they go off and start a dog training program down the road or whatever it’s it’s the principles of like I would have liked to known that that was your intentions of doing these things because it would have been a different relationship because then it kind of gets it kind of goes sometimes it goes sour after that where you spend so much forming these people and they just go which really isn’t good because the dog training world is very small and you know if you burn bridges even just one that connects to a lot of different things so if you are going to go work for somebody and your intentions is to go do your own thing I would mention it I think it’s a respect thing I think it’s important to tell that person like hey I want to give you my all I want to learn I appreciate it and in the future I’m probably going to want to do something my own in the future maybe somewhere else like and it’s not just about techniques and dog training it’s if you’re going to start your own business how to run a business because again going back to what I was talking about in the beginning there’s so many people who are the best dog handlers maybe even the best trainers in the world like super talented people but they fail they fail and they fall flat on their face when they open up a business because but opening up your own business is so hard over 90% of businesses in America fail it’s so hard to get by and actually make money and be successful in the United States with opening up um it’s American dream everybody wants it but so hard to get so in conclusion guys work hard do the right thing always and focus on what you’re good at and I’m in my moving studio which I plan on taking the road this this spring but I’d like to be on the road more I’d like to actually travel the country a lot more and work with you guys helping you out with your business doing dog training seminars etc if you want to support that like this video leave a comment below let me know what you think of this video and just say hey great video good job sweet sweatshirt from my buddy Tyler you know stuff like that because it really helps encourage me to continue to do these videos and I’m gonna keep doing them and again I’d like to travel the country a couple times a year and work with you guys from coast to coast and and be with you guys and the more people who know about this stuff and the more people who support it you know it is ammunition for me so like comment that’s the way you can support me thank you guys so much for listening to me rant and help you guys out with 3 tips on how to become a dog trainer I appreciate you guys I will talk to you next time pusci be a quick example of some of the daily stuff [Music] look what the cat dragged in what’s up Zack what are you doing go get one of the puppies and put them on the treadmill that’s what Chris does and then we have 30 plus dogs in here plus everything here plus whatever tailors say just like going on all the time so just doing a video on how to become a professional dog trainer and all the stuff that goes through it like puppy puppy police prospects right Chris so anyway got three other staff with 30-plus dogs all of that responsibility fine so just a little [Music] [Applause] …
