[Music] the time has finally come it’s funny i get asked all the time when am i getting a salt stop it’s never do i like my table saw do i want to upgrade what would i upgrade to it’s usually straight up when you’re getting a saw stop and it just seems like for albeit good reasons it’s become the go-to standard for table saws i just have a little bit of footage assembling the saw and taking it to the point of making my first cut with it since there’s already a lot of in-depth assembly and review videos on the soft stops here on youtube but i have my old saw all cleaned up and ready to sell and i figured while i still have it i’d set the two saws side by side and go over some of the big differences between the two different calibers of saws [Music] the configuration i went with on the new saw stop is the professional cabinet saw with the three horsepower and the 36 inch t-glide fence as far as assembly they’re pretty much on par from what i can remember with that one but i will say stahlstop goes above and beyond with their instructions they’re almost a little too in-depth if that’s possible but nonetheless one thing that’s very apparent right away is just the fit and finish and quality of the materials a lot thicker steel more cast iron versus some thin stamped steel and a lot of aluminum on the other saw here on the saw stop the front and back rails they’re thick steel all one piece and they are dead straight here you can see the thin aluminum extrusion rails they’re actually two piece there’s a seam right here just creates a hinge point not ideal for keeping these nice and straight this configuration of the saw stop that i have is over 100 pounds heavier than my old saw and that weight and solidity is always a good thing on machines like this even though the new saw is quite a bit heavier it’s actually easier to move since i went with this industrial mobile base it has all four casters that swivel so it’s easy to move in any direction that i want to it’s just super smooth to raise and lower and then with this dial it just has the one swivel caster so you kind of have to shimmy it where you want and then when you go to lower it kind of makes you cringe every time and makes you wonder geez what did i just throw out of alignment this time as far as the cast iron they’re both 27 inches deep but the old saw is only 20 inches wide and i’m over doubling that on this new saw with 44 inches of cast iron the cast iron on the saw stop is absolutely dead flat and with the cast iron wings and the steel rails i was able to get this whole thing perfectly aligned and flat and that’s something i could never do on my old saw these thin stamp steel wings on this hole are kind of pillowed so they’re high in the middle and taper down in every direction so just never mind getting that aligned to the whole table the center cast iron should be flat right well we don’t even need a flashlight to see that this one is far from flat not only is the difference in quality of materials obvious the way that you can make adjustments to this table saw is so much easier and i have this thing dialed in to be an absolutely precision machine and in my personal chase for perfection this is a huge game changer switching over to a beesmeyer style fence is another huge increase in accuracy for me to square this up solstop’s made it nice and easy with these allen keys right on the front and these pads on the front help take out any slop and you can fine tune this and get it gliding nice and smooth i haven’t been a fan of this style of fence that clamps on the back as well you can see there’s a lot of slop in here and when you tighten it down you could be clamping it either towed in or towed away from the blade every workaround i’ve done to fix that hasn’t lasted and lately what i’ve been doing is just when i set the fence i’ll measure the front and back of the blade to make sure it’s the same and obviously that just adds more time and more hassle so it’ll be nice just to set the fence and get to cutting i just want to reiterate in no way am i meaning to just talk bad about saws like my old one i’ve had that since before i started this youtube channel so everything on here and of course all the stuff i can’t take the time to film has been built with that saw but i figured youtube had enough unboxing and review videos on the saw stops i thought it’d be a more beneficial video and i saw a need to actually show the differences between the two caliber of saws alright let’s take a break from just talking and actually cut some wood might as well go big with a piece of eight quarter hard maple [Music] [Music] all right it actually made it through it doesn’t always on thicker hardwoods like this but it made it through it was of course pretty slow and quite a bit of burning so i’m gonna go ahead and switch over the exact same blade cut the same board and we’ll try out the new saw stop [Music] the next comparison i want to do is dust collection now sawstop does have integrated dust collection within their blade guard but for comparison’s sake i’m going to go ahead and use it without this for this test [Applause] [Music] [Music] i know that’s a little hard to judge on video especially after just a handful of cuts but the design for the dust collection on the saw stop is so much better you can see it goes straight into the back here so first of all it’s easy to hook up and when we open it up here on the side you’ll see there’s a dust hose inside that goes from that fitting in the back all the way up to a dust shroud directly around the blade and when i look inside here you’ll see there’s practically no dust right now versus this and all this dust was under the fence by the way and i literally just had this all cleaned out looking brand new but i’ll bring you in and also show a clip of how caked up it was before i cleaned it and you’ll see there’s quite a bit in there right now as you can see even with four inch dust collection hooked up which in this case goes in the bottom of the saw which that in itself can be a pain if you have to hook this up and move it to different tools that can be a pain reaching up under there but even with that hooked up quite a bit still piles up inside the saw and these are just creature comfort things that really do make a difference overall the only access here is this back panel that’s bolted on i took that off had it all cleaned out put the panel back on and then i realized i better loop stuff up because it was kind of sounding a little squeaky so i had to take it back off and put it back on versus the saw stop we have that nice panel that opens easy and then there’s other access panels on the side and back as well on that like i said it’s the little things that really add up and make a difference and i can sit here and nitpick the differences all day but just a couple more that really stood out to me while i was just running those couple quick tests were the blade break and raising and lowering the blade check this out i already counted off camera and i have to crank this 36 times to completely raise or lower it [Music] 15 rotations on the saw stop this is just an easy example to show how smooth everything is [Music] the faster you can get these spinning sharp things stopped in this case over 10 seconds faster that’s always a good thing we’ve made it to this point the video without talking about the elephant in the room and that’s the number one reason you buy a saw stop table saw everyone always says even without this technology it’s an unbelievable saw and up to this point i definitely have to agree with that somehow if you aren’t yet aware saw stops are the only table saw with the flesh sensing technology and if you are ever to come in contact with the blade there’s a break inside the machine that will almost instantaneously grab and retract the blade and prevent you from seriously hurting yourself if you’d like to see this in action there’s plenty of videos out there just search for saw stop hot dog video and you’ll find it but my plan is to never have to use this feature about eight years ago even having grown up using saws and having experience i got bit by a table saw luckily it wasn’t too bad and i’m just missing about an eighth inch out of my thumb and it looks a little goofy after they sewed it back together but that’s all it took to really wake me up and make me more conscious and aware of what i’m doing at all time on any of these tools so nothing beats proper techniques and common sense but my thinking was i wanted to upgrade to a better more precise more powerful saw so i might as well spend the extra and get the peace of mind that comes with a saw stop hopefully you enjoyed the video and were able to take something away from it be sure to subscribe if you’re not already to see this beast put to work …
