[Music] every time i take my dog i don’t run i can’t help but to remember that i did that in prison we used to run in prison together i was incarcerated when i was 19. initially i was sent into life without the possibility of parole for the first 10 years i was a wreck and then i met brother i joined the positive change program they paired a rescue dog from q shelter with inmate and the goal is to have them both rehabilitate each other i was actually scared of dog my whole life when i met prada i tried to get her out of the crate but as i reached in there she actually bit me i sat there for an hour or so for her to come out herself i just look at this fragile animal and i imagine whatever it is that she had endured that caused her to be fearful of human to that extent and i think i learned a lot empathy in that process all this dog that they brought in or abandoned or surrendered it’s just natural for you to be empathetic towards them and that’s really like the first time in my life i cannot understand how somebody can harm an animal at that time it kind of clicked for me like how can i harm another human being [Music] at the beginning it was establishing trust [Music] for the first two weeks i take time to get closer to her gradually she was able to eat off of my hand within a couple months when she started to trust me she just want to be on my lap all the time so i took her everywhere with me all the other inmates were just looking at me because it’s strange we don’t see animal in prison you yourself don’t think you’re a responsible person no one ever trusts you with anything and here they’re giving you something very precious and they ask you to be accountable for that it’s a form of empowerment as the relationship build when you see the transformation you make in that dog it reinforces your self-confidence it builds your sense of self-worth and essentially it change you as a person for the last six weeks of the program we’re teaching them how to pass k-9 good citizen certification they need to sit in place they need to come when you call them they also need to be non-reactive around other dogs they should be able to allow other people to pick them and that’s a big thing for products they have a trust issue so after all the dog passed the cct test we see them off nobody like that i didn’t think that i was going to see her again after that i have another dog named turbo i didn’t know i was going home or not but i convinced my family to adopt both of those dogs i was in the program for four rounds i came out of that as a better person it made me question a lot of my behavior and my old belief system and then the law changes which afford me an opportunity to appear before the parole board and all that lead to me getting found suitable at my first view that’s when i saw prada and turbo again it’s very fulfilling to be able to see them and know that i helped give them a better life it’s strange for me because all my life i never interact with dogs but they’re like my child because i helped raise them i really feel and understand for these dogs the reason why they aggressive because the owner did not understand them they are insecure most of us prisoners used to feel that way in a lot of ways they kind of saved me they taught me that i have a capacity to help other people that i do have value to offer i continue to reflect on that and use that as a reason to do everything that i do now [Music] you …
