all right folks we are here with whiskey eight-month-old pitbull he’s a beautiful dog he’s only about five days into our board and train program and we are charging him up on the place board now we’ve taught him this place board mostly by free shaping it so we’re going to show you a little bit what his ability to stay on the place board is via free shaping we’re also going to go ahead and free shape the stay i’d say free shape it there’ll be a little bit of corrective action which is going to be what we call a negative punishment meaning we’re going to take food away he’s not going we’re going to take something away which will in turn punish him so you’ll see how that works if he stays on the place board he gets paid if he comes off the place board without being asked he does not get food and we will mark that with you’ll see how that plays out and then also because he’s already doing pretty good on this i don’t think you guys learn by watching a dog that already knows how to do something you’re going to learn by watching a dog struggle through the learning process and figure out how to go on a touch pad so he does not know how to go on a touch pad we’ll see how quickly he learns so we may even use the place board to teach him what the touch pad is and then pull the place board out and see if he goes on the touch pad when we remove the place board completely so let’s see how that plays out right now free let’s just see if he goes on the place board on his own watch i’m not going to tell him to go on chances of him going on pretty high let’s see now he’s he’s only going two paws on i’m not paying for that it’s not good enough he knows better so we can either wait him out or i can cheat myself cheat myself ever so slightly this way to kind of speed up the process all right so we mark and pay for that i’ll pay him in position i’ll get one more because i want him to start coming on all four feet by himself i’m going to just position myself here perfect you can see how my positioning oops he missed that one where’d it go buddy right there you can see how just my positioning like i’ll pause here it’s gonna be a lot harder for him to get on i’m not saying he won’t get on good job i’m actually very happy with that so that’s all you can do in free shaping really is control your environment but there’s not a lot of movement good job from from me i’m meaning there’s not a lot of food lauren can you food lure him on there yeah can you teach leash pressure and e-collar there’s so many ways to teach a dog to go on a place board but if you free shape it it’s a deeper learning and the dog will love going on the place board so we’ll get one more rep and then we’re going to ask him to stop coming off the place board free we’re going to ask for a little bit of duration in the command so you see in that in that instance not only was i wanting him to get all four feet on now i want him to sit or down while in position sit or down and look at me while on the place board so we’ll wait for him to look at me and see how that goes it could take a minute it’s better if my sunglasses are off i always like to let the dog look in the eye a lot of communication comes from the face beautiful free all right last time i know that last one was the last one no this is the real last one wait for it oh yeah much better picture so a lot of times i pay for my eyes and the reason i pay for my eyes is because he’s looking at me from my eyes could you pay from down here yeah but then what you’ll get is he’s looking in the eyes but then like which of these hands is going to pay me instead it’s look me in the eyes because payment’s coming from the eyes payment’s coming from here we’ll do one more and then and then we’re going to look for some good job otherwise you get dogs really at the waist level so i expect him to come off in fact i’m going to catch it early i’m going to try to let him know if you stay on there you get paid if not i will spatial pressure him back again there are many ways to teach a dog to stop coming off the placeboard but this is what you’re learning right now is the beginning stages of teaching a dog how to stay we love using the placebo to teach us stay because it’s a very defined place very defined place meaning you’re either on it or you’re off of it if i ask them to stay right here what’s the difference between here and here i’m still on the asphalt i’m still on the basketball court you see i waited for him to settle into that thought about coming off he’s going to come off and that’s fine when he comes off we’ll mark it he’s not going to get paid in fact i can do some nope good every time he stays i’m asking for one second three seconds five seconds 10 seconds 30 seconds i would suggest if you’re trying to teach the stay the best time to teach to stay is that maybe after a long walk chances of you getting a stay is going to be a lot more improved than right out of the gate first thing in the morning when your dog is very hungry and and very jacked up so we don’t name the stay until it’s reliable or until you know with 100 certainty that after you say the word he’s gonna do it he’s gonna do it or if he does mess it up there is a instant check it out instant correction for messing it up and i don’t mean like it has to be an aggressive correction just something you know what would suck this is the best way sometimes to explain stuff wait for it back a little bit of spatial pressure i marked it with a the best way sometimes explain how to do something is to explain how you don’t do something what if i told him to stay and then he came off god forbid i told him to stay he comes off and i pay him for that or i miss it or i don’t pay it he just learned oh when that guy says stay i i guess i could just come off so we want every single time i say stay to have 100 reliability on it right so don’t name it until you love it does he know how to stay yeah he’s figuring it out though now we’ve generalized it here now check this out i’m pretty much place a bet on this if i go down to tie my shoe he’s coming off so we’ll see what happens yep and we don’t get paid but we can pressure him back on by the way this is the purely positive way of training it meaning all we’re doing is giving them food or denying them food a little bit of spatial pressure if spatial pressure’s too much uh for the folks at home then um i don’t know what to tell you because all i’m doing is kind of steering him with my body right in fact while we’re rolling this is real life uh i’m gonna get my drink oh good job buddy and he’s gonna get a bigger payment for that and i’m going to pay on the place board to let them know that’s where you’re getting paid placement of the reward is huge it wouldn’t make sense for him to stay and he does such a good job of saying that i throw the food can you do that yeah but you’re going to create a lot of drive and a lot of like enthusiasm drive is the best word i don’t want my dog staying like oh any minute now i was going to throw something no no no a lot of stability and duration in the place board in fact some people won’t even pay their dog for being on the place board they teach it good timing on that one c is learning now you could also throw in a duration marker if you like some people do that some people hate it duration marker would be good good good means i like what you’re doing keep doing it i’ll pay you soon wait for it getting frustrated getting bored good now you say how come you don’t pay him for going back on because you can very quickly teach that the dog must come off in order to get yelled at to come back on in order to activate payment no no that doesn’t get you paid kind of a funky click because he was looking about coming off let me take my drink this video is officially unofficially sponsored by celsius fuels your local dog trainer such myself we’ll give some to the dog just kidding all right put that there look what a wonderful job he’s doing now where the positive only method will fail you is when anything anything on a scale of one to ten let’s call it a level two distraction ten being an elephant rolling by with you know dogs dancing on the back of the elephant and someone throwing food off that’s a level 10 distraction a level 2 distraction might be like someone coming by on a bicycle and he might be interested in that bicycle someone walking a dog a hundred yards away me going and crowding him is not going to be enough to stop that or counter to counterbalance that distraction and you can already see that good good good you can already see like just his pure boredom we can be out here all day doing this so instead what we’re going to do you can back time to a fence post or now i can start to pressure him for coming off a little bit of pressure he’s a tough boy he can handle it and so now my ch is going to be followed with pressure pressure pressure let’s show you what that looks like now pressure pressure pressure that’s on the flat collar no big deal good job the other way you can do it is is do what we call a set up for failure i know this seems evil but you have to introduce your own distractions and as you can see there’s plenty of times that he’s come off and i’m a half second two three seconds late for correcting it so when you set up your own failure when you set up your own distraction you can be there to the minute to correct it and you say oh that’s so mean that’s one piece of hot dog he now gets paid three pieces of hot dog three pieces for staying do you think he’ll do that again 50 50 i’d say wait for him to look at me and he gets paid just because food hits the floor for instance we’re at a restaurant and a french fry falls on the floor that doesn’t mean you come off the place board it means you stay on the place board and i will give you a french fry now when i bend down to pick these up it’s questionable whether he’ll come off or not so let’s see how it plays out cheated him to look at me with a little smooch just to shape that behavior that i’m looking for he’s very focused on our hands that’s how he came to us i’ve been working slowly but surely on getting his focus from the hands up to the eyes but look how wonderful he’s already doing we’ll switch it up we’ll throw a different again that’s us creating our own level of distraction what level of distraction is that on a scale of one to ten like a two or three therefore he got like a two or three on the correction scale again flat collar he’s a pit bull tail’s still wagging so happy to be here balance training is not only a more efficient way not faster pay attention because oh you’re just fast tracking it no it’s efficient it’s efficient would you rather earn your master’s degree in four years or two years and i’m saying at the end you’ll learn the same he’s going to get his master’s degree in off-leash obedience in five weeks not 50 weeks and he’s going to be better for it he’s going to be it’s going to be such a clear picture there’s a time to stay which by the way after that one correction he hasn’t come off in three minutes in fact we’re going to go over here i’m going to tell him to stay because i’m pretty damn confident he’s going to stay so there’s a little distraction over there dog barking i can even tap tap stay come over here now if he nails this he is going to get a jackpot of a lifetime he’s going to get all the food that’s left sprinkled in with like 10 15 pieces of hot dog this is a big payday for him he’s going to get all this lovely wonderfulness look at that stay now what happens if i tie my shoe cross your fingers you can see he’s about to break so i’m going to half time my shoe and because he didn’t come off big payday big old payday this is what’s considered a primary reward meaning all those times i threw a piece that’s a secondary work this is a primary reward in other words paying in position paying in position creates a little more uh duration and stability within the position so look at this wonderful place to be we can pet them oh and this is just gonna this is just messes up all the trainers out there you shouldn’t bother a dog while they’re eating hmm i do it anyways it’s actually good for them because i asked someone gave me a hard time earlier on social media they said that uh you should not bother a dog while they’re eating and you should not get the dog used to a two-year-old i had a two-year-old my daughter come over to my police canine and pet them and feed them and they said you can’t do that because you’re just asking for the child to get bit yeah maybe if you don’t know what you’re doing we’re not bothering the dog i’m literally bringing the food to him and if i take some away it’s fine because i can bring some right back does it look like i’m bothering this dog at all no and i’m kind of going off on a tangent but they’re like you shouldn’t train the dog to do that you shouldn’t train the dog to be used to the kid coming around which is just doesn’t make sense to me so i fire back with this what do you think is easier to train a two-year-old dog in this case he’s eight months old to train an eight-month-old dog to be okay with anyone and everyone including small children coming around feeding him you think that’s easier to train or is it easier to train every potential child in my life and his future life teach all of those kids my kids the neighbors kids the owners kids to never go near him while he’s eating what do you think the chances of success are for that you imagine telling a two-year-old don’t go over there when there’s food when there’s a toy when there’s a bone when there’s a stick in other words never go near the dog because the chance of the dog biting you because you might be bothering him are so high no no no let’s be realistic folks we’re going to train the dog that i can touch you i can pull your ear look at his tail wagging i can pull your ears i can do whatever i want while you’re eating and it’s a it’s it’s enjoyable we’re here eating together we’re having a good time he’s happy does he look annoyed to you no now if i wasn’t talking so much i’d be all up in his business and we’ll continue to do that so that when when he goes home the i can tell you that i will tell the owner you can trust him around anyone at any time with anything food toy otherwise i love you too buddy he’s such a great dog i really pit bulls get such a bad rap it’s silly all right folks think that video was long enough thank you all very much for watching hopefully you like what you saw and we will see you all on the next video [Music] you …
