normally when i train a dog i use verbal markers meaning i say yes which means the dog’s going to receive a reward or i say free which means a dog is released and they’re going to receive a reward but i’m often asked by people how can they do the training by using a clicker a clicker is a very common tool that’s used in the dog training industry so i’ve been using the clicker with a young puppy and i’m going to demonstrate today exactly how i like to teach a young puppy and how i like to use a clicker in my training when i’m using a clicker instead of having two markers the continuation marker and the terminal marker for my dogs i use yes and free with a clicker i treat it as a terminal marker so that means the click means the dog is going to receive a reward but they’re also released from the position if i want to work on duration in a position so if i am working a stay instead of using a continuation marker i simply use verbal praise so i’m going to start working with jet here he’s a young puppy and the moment he does the behavior when he completes it so his butt hits the ground click his elbows hit the ground for the down click he completes the spin click he jumps on the climb click so pay attention to when i click with the clicker and also just like our yes and our free every time you click you owe your dog a reward remember the click is just like a paycheck it only has value because it always predicts the reward and with him since he’s a young puppy and it’s new training we’re going to be using continual reinforcement so i’m going to reward every single correct behavior from him i’m going to use a combination of leash pressure as well as luring also notice how i say the command before i present the physical cue and i click before i give the dog a treat so i’m going to start with climb then the q there’s the click sit cue click another thing that helps quite often when i’m doing this is because it’s difficult to hold the clicker the treats as well as the leash so what i like to do is i take the leash i put my middle finger through it and then i wrap it around my two fingers and then i can hold the clicker and i have control of the leash so we’re going to do some more commands down then the q i’m going to use the leash very good buddy off then the queue sit then the queue good hey buddy buddy spin then the q down then the q very nice little man i also like to incorporate the come when called so we’re going to say come and then back up stop and lift click reward very good we’re going to guide him into heel position by stepping back with our left foot using the leash to help guide as well bring him around back in the heel boom click for that we’re gonna ask him to sit lift click oops i clicked a little early there that’s okay down then the cue there’s the click remember click is releasing him climb then the queue boom so you have to be good at clicking the moment your dog does the behavior correctly let’s ask for a sit good boy i’m going to do another down this time i’m going to use luring instead of the leash down then the q very nice very very good my little man so you can see if you’ve watched some of my other training videos if i wasn’t using the clicker it would be this now you’re going to see how i’m going to replace the click with free and that’s how i train most of my dogs so if i was using my voice i would say off free then reward oops i dropped it come then the q free then the reward spin hey free reward so once again go back to the clicker climb then the queue boom there’s the click sit good remember it’s release and reward so now let’s say i want to do the climb stay i want to start working on a little bit of that duration getting the dog to maintain the position i don’t like to use the word stay so i don’t walk away saying stay to a dog you can if you like it won’t negatively impact the training but it’s not necessary once we place our dogs on a commanded position the stay is implied so i have him on a climb stay right now and if i’m going to walk away and i want to reinforce the climb stay instead of saying stay i just say climb even though he’s on it so he jumps off i would say wrong i would grab the leash guide him back up good boy now if you’ve seen my other stay videos i don’t like to reward them right away if they break the stay but after they hold it for a few seconds i can give them a reward so instead of saying yes or clicking i’m just going to give verbal feedback so i’m going to step back good boy build more distance good wrong grab the leash and again you can use whatever word you like so i was actually working with a client the other day and he preferred to use stay instead of wrong how can i incorporate stay well if you want to incorporate stay instead of saying wrong when your dog breaks the position say stay the moment your dog breaks a position so watch how i do it stay then i come back and put them on so now stay is actually predicting something that’s the most important thing when we’re working with our dogs we have to make sure each word predicts something our words mean what they predict good boy so i can use a verbal marker too if i want i can say yes nice job or what i do is just good boy very nice verbal phrase praise wrong or stay whatever word you want to use bring him back good boy very good after he holds it for a few seconds we can reward again wrong take the leash i prefer to use wrong so i’m going to use that come on big guy so i’m using the lesion by telling him wrong the moment he jumps off the position and we put him back on it teaches him what he needs to do is either stop what he’s doing or go back to the previous position when your dog understands that and you say wrong or stay or whatever word you choose your dog will either freeze or go back into the same position another thing to keep in mind climb when i give a dog a command such as come for me it doesn’t mean come to me what it means is a position so let me let me show you what i mean by that so right here if i bring him to me come here big guy this that’s come that position just like this is center that’s a position this is heel well a little sloppy heel but that’s a position and again that’s a position climb so if i had a dog that was 20 feet away that dog is going to come to me if i say center or if i say heal or if i say come you can use whatever commands you like we’ll just do a few more of these and that’ll be a good session for this guy sit good boy down very good i’m gonna have him come off excellent nice work buddy sit good heel very good good good job down excellent now he’s warming up sit very good buddy off good and remember we want to make the training really fun and really engaging for the dog so i’m often doing a lot of different commanded positions remember it’s not just sit down sit down sit down sit down sit down the entire time that’s going to be boring you want to incorporate the sit off stand down come heel center spin walking backwards all these different things is going to make the training more interesting more fun therefore in the long run your dog’s going to do better because they’re going to enjoy it more and you’re going to have an overall better performing dog in all these different commands [Music] you …
