what is the number one device to get rid of a slipped disc now today I’m going to talk to you about what is spinal decompression versus what is the old school rack and I can show you what we use every single day with our clients who have a slip disc or a prolapse disc now if you don’t have access to a decompression device I’m going to also show you how you can do this at home to try and alleviate pressure off of your slip disc or prolapse disc my name is Dr Jeremy Andrews I’m a doctor of KY practic here at West Chiropractic in Surin let me show you what a slipped disc is so just to dispel any myths a disc does not actually slip it’s a prolapse disc or a herniated disc or a bulging disc let me show you on this segment here so this is a segment of the spine these are the knobbly bits that you feel on your back so this is coming through the side here yellow bit is a spinal cord spinal nerves they come out the side here and then this red thing this is the disc so think of the disc like a jam dut so first stage of a disc collapsing it needs pressure on it from the bone then what’s going to happen there’s going to be pressure on the disc so hopefully you can just see that little red bit red bit bulging out there there’s going to be a bulging disc that’s going to cause a lot of inflammation around the the spine it’s going to cause pressure on the nerve the second part is it’s going to start to uh prolapse and then prolapse and herniate roughly the same thing and you see that it’s pressing on the nerve so that’s going to cause a lot of problems uh down the leg when you’re getting that nerve impingement but the start is that bulging section there where the uh the the outer layer of the disc the doughy bit starts to get damaged it’s called the anulus fibrosis the layers of um cartilage we want to make sure we’re protecting those but if they start to get damaged that’s where we need to really jump in and start doing some work on that but the premise behind spinal decompression is to get that disc back into the right position if that is possible at all so the old school rag a lot of our clients who come to us with prolapse disc and we talk about decompression say oh you’re going to put me on the rack well the rack was something back in the’ 7s and the8 s which uh was used in the NHS and it was essentially a stretching device where people were placed on a rack table and their spine was stretched out to try and take pressure off now sometimes they run this for anything from 5 to 6 weeks so long periods of time trying to repair damaged discs we now know that that’s not the most ideal position for the body to be in for long periods of time we find that three times a week of spinal decompression for a short period of time 30 minutes is enough to get some gentle track through the base of the spine and the whole premise behind spinal decompression coupled with Chiropractic adjustments is that it creates a vacuum for the disc to back in like this so when you have compression on the joints like that and the disc is prolapsed the idea behind spinal the compression is to open up the joints to allow the the disc to come back into that area of space so if that is like that we separate the joints like that the disc can then come back into that area and then we can start to heal the anulus around it the annulus is the outer layer of the jam donut so if there’s damage there it can cause the disc to prolapse in the future and obviously the two either sides the discs above and below can be prone to prolapse as well but come on through let’s go have a look at the decompression machine and I’ll show you what I mean okay so here we have the spinal decompression unit so sturd beds here and then you have two belts okay so I’m going to show you these two belts in a second once I start moving around the room belt the bottom there it’s going to go around the bottom part of the prolapse so usually around the hips the most prolapses we see kind of down the base of the spine and the top belt here it wraps around the chest and the aim is to keep that fixed so when the pulley starts pulling it takes the pressure off the back and then pulls down the bed the whole premise behind decompression it goes in a pyramid so it pulls for 30 seconds relaxes for a minute pulls for 30 seconds relaxes for a minute and it goes up in a staggered approach take pressure off the back and it starts to come back down the other side for 25 to 30 minutes so these are the two belts here you see the bottom belt there and the top belt so this is the traction unit here that’s obviously going to pull so you see that pyramid there how that’s where it works up and we can change the pounds of pressure we can change the area the spine we’re working on we can change the hold time the rest time so it can be customized to the person to get pressure off the base of the spine okay so that’s great but not everyone has one of those in their garage so if you don’t have access to a chiropractor nearby with a spinal decompression unit then there is something that you can do at home to help with this so you’ll need a traction device something like this this is a a Lumber traction device here so you see that sort of pyramid approach now this is going to go underneath the base of the spine to help take pressure off the back so let me show you exactly how this works and this is going to help decompress the lower back so you can sit down at home and you just want to make sure that this spinal unit is going right up into the buttock here now you do want to get this checked out by a professional first to make sure that you are doing the right thing but generally speaking if there is some sort of mild disc bulge then this is going to be very effective if you really really struggling with a huge honied disc and there’s lots of sciatica you definitely want to try and seek professional help before doing this cuz it may make things worse but light pressure on here so you really want to make sure that when you lie back you’re just taking some pressure on with the core and you want to make sure your knees are bent as well neck is flat so you can see that my back is being arched around over here so when it arches it’s going to create some traction through your spinal joints it’s going to help to cause some pressure in the base of the spine and help to stretch the back out now the main thing you want to do here is really try and push your bum down so if you see I’m trying to push my bum down to the floor trying to increase that Arch on my back try and get a stretch through my back and then the top part of the joint is pushing into the base of my spine around L4 that’s the the second lowest Lumber vertebra we have okay so bum like this right against the bum knees bent remember and then back flat and then try and not this you’re trying to push down through here we can change the position of where the wedge is so if I’m really struggling with what we call a hypol dois so an increased curve in the back you can put it here and it’s going allow the back to sink down this is not so much of a disc but it does help with an increased curve in the back takes pressure off the glutes and the buttocks now you want to make sure you’re lying on this for 3 minutes to start with okay 3 minutes for the first few days then go to 6 9 12 15 never more than 15 if it causes any more pain if it’s causes any problems when you’re getting up you really need to stop doing it now when you get up I like to lift my bum up if it’s not too sore and then pull it out like this and and then roll off to the side some people if I’m on the floor they just roll off to the side and then get up on their hands and knees because I’m on this bench I’ll do it like this and then I’m on my side legs come down like this so where do you get those wedges from or you can find them on Amazon if you just type in Lumber wedge and you should be able to find something very similar to that just be careful those like semicircular back stretches they’re very generic uh they’re not specific for the base of the spine so you do want to get something with a good point in it I mean it’s not too hard but hard enough that it’s going to cause distraction through the base of the spine as well uh if you need any help on it just drop a comment in the show notes below and I’ll be sure to get back to you on that so if you like the video please hit the like button subscribe to the channel for the regular updates and of course you can grab copies of my best
